Friday Night Lights.

Not football related. The peeps are officially grown up. They started flying out of the cardboard enclosure in the garage, so we moved them outside tonight. I'm so nervous something will happen to them.

I didn't get to posting this last night. Which is probably okay. We put in a large 250 watt bulb for the girls and they all snuggled up next to it last night. It got down to 64 degrees in their coop - but they seemed to handle it just fine. This morning I gave them a treat and they were really really happy to see me.

The Great Pumpkin.

The massive pumpkin from the patch has been killed. Harvested. Killed. Very sad. Although now I know exactly how much this bad boy weights. Weights in at 90 full pounds of grooviness. I can't wait to carve it up!

House Replenishing

In replenishing furniture in the house the man sofa is a favorite of Bend's and the new desk means that I finally have my own space for my lap top.

Strange Gift ...

On the front porch this evening this is what I found. Strange and odd. Gift or is it something I should wrap back up? I gave it to the chickens instead - who played chicken football chasing the bird that had the bug in its mouth all around the cage. Good times!

Individule Peach Crisp Recipe

I love crisps. I think they are delicious and a great way to use summer fruit. When my honey is out of town I don't want to make a big pan of it though. So, I've invented individule peach crisps. You can put any fruit you want into this recipe.

The Game Plan:
1-2 peaches (per bowl)
Preheat oven to 425 degrees
You can peel or not peel the peaches (I like a mix)
2 tablespoons flour (per bowl)
1 tablespoon oats (per bowl)
1 tablespoon brown sugar (per bowl)
1 teaspoon nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger
melt 1 tablespoon butter and mix in another tablespoon brown sugar and 1 tablespoon rolled oats. Top each container with the melted butter mixture.

Bake for 11 minutes and enjoy. DELICIOUS!

Pickled Veggies

When you can't get enough of pickles ... take your garden veggies and the same recipe from the pickles I posted last week. They are delicious and a great way to use up veggies from the garden.

Sleeping Kevins.

I know they might look strange. But, when they sleep they look really bizarre. It is hard to snap photos of them because each time I go outside to see them they jump up. They are growing slowly - but adorable!

Fall.

Fall is in the air. The mornings are cool and the pumpkin patch is starting to die back. I just cut a few of them and now have them around the house. I can't wait for Halloween!

When You Have No Furniture.

Since the fire - we still don't have a ton of furniture. What does this mean? Well there is a lot of cat action shoved into one chair. Sad. But, true!

What We Eat.

Well the garden is at it again. Peaches out the wazoo ... winter squash and I used some of the peaches to make peach butter (which has a lot less sugar than jams or preserves).

A good blogger buddy of mine stopped eating or drinking anything with high fructose corn syrup. I decided to give it a go. It is crazy how many common items have high fructose corn syrup in it. I've made it since Friday without having any and am not really noticing it - well other than wanting something delicious and sweet every once and a while. Hence the ginger butter. YUMMY!

The Kevins.

Mike built a little perch for the Kevins. They are practicing sitting on it - which is adorable. Turns out the Dominques (the black ones) are tall enough and have strong enough wings that they can flap to the top of the cardboard if I'm not watching them. Naughty little girls.

Monster Carrots.

Fall might be coming ... but the garden is still pumping. The white and orange carrots are ready and perfect for some delicious salads. I might even pickle some :)

Garden ...

Fall is in the air and the garden is still doing well. Potatoes have finally come up and are so delicious it isn't even funny. Mike actually made a statement the other night while we were picking veggies, "I never knew growing your own food could be so freaking fun." Made me smile.

Great Use of Bananas.

With a couple of bananas left - way to ripe to eat - and a few loafs of banana bread already in the freezer I decided to go muffin style. This recipe rocks. These are by far some of the best muffins I've ever eaten!

Recipe:
1 1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 ripe bananas
3/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup packed brown sugar

Topping:
2 tablespoons flour
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter

1. Mix the ingredients in recipe together.
2. Put mixture into lined muffin tins that are greased.
3. Mix topping and put a tablespoon on top of each muffin.
3. Heat oven to 375 degrees and bake for 18-20 minutes

Garden Pickles.

I think I have finally found it. A good - no cook pickle recipe. The dill, cucumbers and garlic are from the garden. I think I might try this recipe on zucchini next!

Recipe:
1 pound of medium cucumbers
3 cloves of garlic
1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
1 teaspoon fresh dill weed
1 whole dried bay leaf
2/3 cup brown sugar
6 1/2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar
6 1/2 tablespoons white-wine vinegar
3/4 cup of water

1. Cut the cucumbers into spears and put them into a jar. Add garlic, peppercorns, mustard seed, dill weed and bay leaf.

2. Stir together sugar - water and pour into jars.

Pickles are ready in 24 hours. Crispy fantasticness!

The Kevins.

Today we let the peeps hang out out back for a bit (in their little area). They got a few bugs and were nibbling on grass. Adorable. They are changing by the day. I'm excited to see them grow and sad to see the baby feathers leaving.

Chicken Update.

I'm having issues getting the images to line up correctly. But, I know people are interested in how the baby peeps are doing and what in the world they will look like when they grow up. The black peeps are Dominiques and will look like this lovely lady when they grow up. Black and white and classic chicken like. The white ones are Silkies and will look like this lady. Covered from head to toe in feathers.

So far they have grown over a inch in 4 days. They are eating a ton of food, not pasting over and looking for bugs. I keep telling them they are too little for bugs - but they don't seem to care.

Date Night.

Tonight was date night. What does that mean - well we went to the feed store to get food for the Kevin's and ate out and went to Lowes. Yes yes - sexy evening I know. But, on the way down was a fantastic rainbow.
