Red Rum ?

Red hair - did you ask for red hair? Too red? Too unnatural?

We've Got The Beet

The Go-Go's have nothing on my garden!

Photo Update

Mike got home last night. Late, but he got home. Sounds like his trip was interesting - interesting enough to want to come home quickly. While driving down to ABQ I figured out my favorite book of all time. I've been thinking about it for a while now. And have finally figured it out.

The gnome has been knocked down - again - the skunks have been busy these past couple nights.

My squash, tomatoes and flowers are growing well in all the rain.

Monkeys and Madness

I've always always wanted a monkey. Ever since I was a child. I had a stuffed animal white monkey as a child. The monkey was named TwoTwo. Which made no sense to anyone, but me.

Mike has been gone. Gone on travel to Kiev and he has a new drinking partner. See the photo. I'm so jealous. I want this drinking buddy!

Courtney's tattoo is also posted. Oh Court ... you are so white.

Recently I've heard a lot of things. Things that I wonder about. People saying things like, "Its better to be lucky than smart." "Its better to be rich than happy." These sorts of things. I'm going to compile a list. If you have one, please comment.

Gnome Therapy

Before Mike left (weeks ago now) there was an incident with a skunk in the back yard. We heard something digging and Mike got the flashlight, only to see a skunk hanging out right below our bedroom window. Last night, I'm laying in bed reading a book and I hear something outside the window again.

Now, with this said I must tell you something, I have a garden gnome below my window and every day for the past 3 weeks I've had to set it back upright. Something keeps knocking it over. Looks like it has been pushed over actually.

Back to the story. I hear this noise. I get up, grab the flash light and shine it out the window. What do I find? I find two very tiny baby skunks who are rubbing all over the gnome. Making little chirps and pushing into the gnome. Even with the flash light right in their eyes, they continued their gnome therapy. I'll try and get a photo tonight. They look like twins, but who knows, maybe all skunks just look alike!

Mother F*cking Snakes On A Plane

Or was that on the yard? I had read that Samuel L. only wanted to do the movie if they kept the title. The original title had the *f* word in it. I think if you are going to go ahead and make a terrible movie, you should at least have a good title.

I was outside watering and mowing the lawn today when I found a number of snakes. Not one, not two, but enough that I was wondering if we now have a colony of snakes taking over the back yard. What exactly do you call a group of snakes? Not a gaggle. Hmm.

Anyway. Photo of the great snake right here. Mother Freaking Snakes In The Yard. I wonder how that film would be?

Pretty

I noticed the other day, that I had some new pretties I should share. First off, a friend of ours has a very talented daughter and she painted a picture for me. She knows I love water and did this painting. Then I was cutting flowers and decided to let them float instead of stand. Don't they spend too much time trying to keep their heads up? Can't they rest? Lastly I got new fabric. Wonderful fabric. I can not wait to use it.

On a different note I've been working on some cartoon characters. I'm a terrible artist. Probably the worst on the planet. So, let's hope that the wit out ways the terrible art work huh? I'll post something once I finish a strip. Tough work though. I get one person okay - but person number two goes to pot and I can't use the strip.

Swell Saturday's

I got up early with Mike and took him down to the airport. He is traveling for a couple of weeks and it will give me a load of time to clean cabinets. I know, I know, how exciting is it to clean out cabinets. But, I do love order.

So, I've cleaned out my spice cabinet. See photo. Oh it feels so good.

I weeded the back yard, finished a pair of socks, started a type of bread (that takes 3 days), and moved a hummingbird feeder (which now has 4 birds fighting to feed).

While finishing the socks, we had one hell of a rain/hail storm. I tried to get a photo of the hail without going outside - but it was raining and melting quickly.

Thing People Say

I don't understand why people say certain things. For example. When I was in college I was going to go out late one night - for coffee with friends. And my roommate said, "Have fun getting rapped." It made me scared and upset. Well, when I decided to try soccer a number of people said, "Have fun breaking your ankle." Or something along those lines. And again, I was scared and upset. I of course got over it - went out - and had a great time (by the way ... playing tonight). Why do people say that type of thing though??

On a different note. I've seen a number of interesting sites lately. If you are into old school video games you have to check out people space invaders.

Or for the the cat lover in you .

Weekend Update

Mike and I spent the weekend down South at his parent's house. It was a relaxing weekend of eating, drinking and swimming in the pool. While we were down there we happened to find the scooter of our dreams. It gets great gas mileage and has the cool retro look that I wanted.

I also found that my garden has been kicking while we were gone. There was rain every day, and just enough sun to keep everything happy.

Fourth of July

I made a loaf of bread today. It came out WONDERFUL - and can be modified for other types.

1 teaspoon sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons dry yeast
1 1/4 cup warm water
3 cups flour
1 1/4 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons rosemary
1 egg, lightly beaten

1. Dissolve sugar and yeast in 1/4 cup of water (stand 5 minutes)
2. Mix rest of ingredients and turn or knead for 5 minutes, until smooth
3. Place in covered bowl coated in cooking spray or oil in a warm place for 45 minutes (until doubled in size).
4. Punch dough down, cover let rise for 30 minutes
5. Punch dough down, cover let rise for 10 minutes
6. Roll into 8x4 in loaf pan (pinching edges and getting all air pockets out). Cover let rise for 30 minutes
7. Preheat oven to 425.
8. Uncover dough. Gently brush with egg. Bake at 425 for 12 minutes. Then reduce temperature to 350 and bake for 15 minutes. Cool - serve.

You'll love it.

Noises In The Night

I love lightning and thunder. I love the sound of rain on the roof. It has rained pretty much every night for the past 4 days, and it has been lovely. In particular, I love it when there is a flash of light, which wakes you up. And then the rumble or snap right on top the house. Makes you think the lighting must be right on top of you. I can't remember there ever being electrical storms in Alaska. Nope. Never. An engine fell out of an airplane and landed in my friends living room, but never any lightning and thunder. I absolutely love it.

I'm sitting out back, in the dark and thinking about getting a photo of the storm. Is it possible to catch lightning? I've been trying. But, it seems like by the time I see it -- it is already too late.

One one thousand - SNAP.

Math Question

Today's question.

7 large watermelons were purchased for a party. Their weights were consecutive odd numbers, and averaged 37 lbs. What was the weight of the heaviest watermelon?

** There are two solutions **

Good luck Ed. :)

Saturdays

I love weekends. Not because I can sleep in, and not because I don't have to go to work. I love Saturdays because I can do anything I want. I sort of feel free on Saturdays.

So, you may wonder, what does she do then?

#1 - decided I want red hair (do you think I look Irish now?)
#2 - Got the coolest math book on the planet and have been forcing everyone on in the house to do puzzles. Yesterday's puzzle: 3,9,7,13,11,__,15,21,19,25 [Bring out your inner geek and solve it]
#3 - cleaned out our gear closet and my clothing closet (as you can see Moab approves)

Murderous Weekend

I did spend Sunday pulling tomato plants out of my garden. I felt terrible about it - but NO ONE wanted them. I was going to take a photo of them sitting in the composter - all sad and limp - but instead I decided to post photos of my garden and some of my favorite plants.

Question, I love gourds. I think they are magically funky. I buy seeds and they turn out how ever the bugs and wind cross pollinate them. Sometimes in nice forms, other times in the shapes of strange objects that could only be loved by their mother. The question is, I bought seeds from The Gourd Lady, who asked me "Do you ever go out on full moon nights and watch your gourds." Qustion 1, is this a come on line? Question 2, if its not a come one WHAT THE HELL IS SHE TALKING ABOUT? I'd love some clarification. I've thought about going out the past full moon, but was oddly driven from the garden. What happens if they turn into large killer pumpkins or something? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you listened to any Miles Davis lately? I'm totally hooked on It Never Entered My Mind.

Strange

This past weekend was warm during the day and a bit cooler at night. It actually rained as well. And then last night - it DUMPED. Filled our rain barrel with one rain. It was 50 degrees this morning and 80% humidity (odd for the Southwest), but lovely! I tried to take a photo of my garden this morning - only to find that the camera was out of batteries. Doh!

Now for the strange bit. On Saturday Mike and I were watching Star Wars. Yes, good old fashion Star Wars 4. Or I like to think about it, the first movie! We started talking about our misconceptions as children. Here is my list:

1. The storm-troopers were robots.
2. Princess Leia and Luke will end up together.
3. Chewbacca would be a good snuggler.
4. All the cars in Grease 1 were taken or traded in races, so there were only motorcycles left; which is why in Grease 2 there are only cycles.
5. E.T. was the scariest monster alive. Not the cute cuddly candy eating freak that he turned out to be.

Odd, how age makes us see things in a different light. Leia and Luke - YUCKY.

Steak - Moab - Carpet??

Last night I'm defrosting some steaks for Courtney and Mike. They are pre-sealed in plastic and sitting in the sink under water. The potatoes on the grill are taking forever and I'm in the living room knitting. Mind you, Moab has already eaten the husk from a corn and proceeded to throw it back up on the carpet.

Then, I hear this noise in the kitchen. And I see a flash of dark color near the sink. I think, "Courtney is just getting some ice water or something." But then, I see Courtney walking into the living room from the other direction. I get up, go into the kitchen .... only to find.

Moab on the floor in front of the sink with one of the steaks. They are large steaks mind you (and she is a small cat). She has pulled it out of the water, out of the sink and onto the floor. She is gnawing at the plastic and has managed to get a hole in the side. Blood is leaking out and she is licking it up (while standing over the steak). Bend is standing near her just watching with this look of, "I had nothing to do with this!" on his face.

The carpet has to be cleaned, the steak was saved, and Moab sat at the table all night begging Mike for more.

This morning she barely woke up because of the steak coma she was in. Must be nice to be Queen of the Kitchen Steak.

Biking - Murder

This morning I biked up to work. It was really nice (until the wind picked up). I actually counted, 53 cars passed me, and it took me 52 minutes. Considering there is some thousand feet of elevation difference between my house and where I work, it wasn't too bad. I may end up doing it more often.

People have been asking out our "All Ladies Murder Mystery" . Remember it hasn't been through an editor yet. But thank you to Donna and Sharron (who's chapters these are).

Deming Races

We went down to Deming this past weekend. Mike did incredible. Two first places and 1 second. His best results to date. It was super hot (as in over 100 every day). The dirt devils were impressive. And the cats did great. Bend and Moab were the best for snuggles. But, by the last day Methow was coming into her own.

The bike, still has an oil leek - which is upsetting. But, Mike seems to think he knows how to fix it. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I also got a load of knitting done. Thanks be to the motorhome gods for cool air conditioning, cats, Mike and knitting. As always - more photos can be seen at the smugmug site.

Hmmm - Should I Become A Robot?

I've had a headache for the past week or so. Hasn't gone away. Medication doesn't help. More coffee, less coffee, more exercise, less exercise ... nothing seems to work.

So, this morning, while out on a run, I think to myself, "Why is my nose running?" And I remember. My allergy medication ran out like 2 weeks ago and I haven't refilled it yet. Thus, I believe that my nose, throat and head are all suffering from allergies.

My question is, why is it that when things happen with your body, it takes SO long to put it together? Sometimes I'll be sleepy, joints ache, hair coming out, gaining weight ... and I'll think, "What in the world is going on? Am I dying?" It takes Mike asking, "Have you had your thyroid medication check recently." for me to put it together.

I'm thinking that in the future we need some sort of digital screen installed in humans to tell us exactly what is going on. It is apparent that breathing, eating, sleeping and defecating are about all I can handle without some sort of note from myself or to myself.

Robot Princess Of The Known Universe. Yes. That has a good ring to it. I'll keep you posted on the mods and XBox hook-up abilities.

West Virginia

This past weekend we went to West Virginia for Kevin and Lee's wedding. I've never been to West Virginia before. It was beautiful. Rolling hills, green everywhere, and old incredible buildings.

I found a cool snake - who was outside the troll bridge and house (we didn't actually go into the troll house, it was pretty scary).

Kevin and Lee's cake was amazingly beautiful. The service was sweet and the church was amazing. Mike and I had a great time.

Summer Birds

A mommy bird and her 3 babies have taken up in the front of our house. They are ADORABLE. Other than the mom zooming around your head if you get too close. Mike got some great photos of her feeding the babies.

On another note. We are leaving this Thursday for Kevin's wedding. The very first time I will have been to Virginia. Courtney has arrived. We're excited to see how the summer goes. And I've decided my new favorite word is canopic.

Also for all those game fans out there - who of course love crafts - Mouser sent me this katamari site. I'm so making one.

Knitted Top - Do you hate it?

This morning I put on my coral top (just finished), that Mike says looks like something Bjork would wear. I was worried that Mike would make some comment this morning. Possibly about how terrible it looks. But instead I get a sideways head cocking and, "Wow. That top goes really well with that skirt. Looks nice."

Amazing. I'm going to have to knit like 100 more of them now!

Next I am thinking I might down a puffy brown sweater for Moab to wear. I'm hoping it makes her look like a little monkey!

Can You Kill?

One of my biggest pit falls as a gardener is my lack of desire to kill things. Right now my vegetable garden is just starting to take off and there are loads of weeds and random veggies from years long ago, that are popping up. I have to tell me self that it is for the good of all man kind that I kill these rogue veggies. I can't stand it though. Really bothers me.

Today I harvested radishes for dinner. They are all getting so big that I may have to pull a bunch more tonight. Anyone need any?

Irony and Vehicles

While driving home from yoga today the picture of irony was as clear as I've ever seen it. The animal control truck is traveling down the road slowly (no doubt looking for dogs and cats to collect and take to the pound), when a leashed puppy out for a walk drags its owner towards the road, eeking every inch out of the leash in an attempt to eat the tires of the truck. Oh the irony of it!

On another note: My favorite author, Christopher Moore, in his latest book, A Dirty Job, has created the most amazing description of any vehicle I've ever read. May I please quote Mr. Moore?

"The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham was the perfect show-off of death machines. It consisted of nearly three tons of steel stamped into a massively mawed, high-tailed beast, lined with enough chrome to build a Terminator and still have parts left over - most of it in long, sharp strips that peeled off on impact and became lethal scythes to flay away pedestrian flesh. Under the four headlights it sported two chrome bumper bullets that looked like unexploded torpedoes or triple-G-cup Madonna death boobs. It had a noncollapsible steering column that would impale the driver upon any serious impact, electric windows that could pinch off a kid's head, no seat belts, and a 325 horsepower V8 with such appallingly bad fuel efficiency that you could hear it trying to slurp liquefied dinosaurs out of the ground when it passed. It had a top speed of a hundred and ten miles an hour, mushy, bargelike suspension that could in no way stabilize the car at that speed, and undersized power brakes that wouldn't stop it either. The fins jutting from the back were so high and sharp that the car was a lethal threat to pedestrians even when parked, and the whole package sat on tall, whitewall tires that looked, and generally handled, like over sized powdered doughnuts. Detroit couldn't have achieved more deadly finned ostentatia if they'd covered a killer whale in rhinestones. It was a masterpiece."

Man I love his writing. Makes me feel like I need the Detroit Death Cadillac.

Going No Where

The latest is that the bike is still broken, we are not going out to the track day in Alabama, and now we have to find some way to ship the bike to Michigan. On the up side, I wont be taking any vacation days. On the down side, i wont be taking any vacation days.

Sunday was what we like to call, "A very home productive day." Mike finished the screening on the enclosed porch. We moved a bird house (I had no idea that you could actually do this, but I read on line that it is possible ... if the house isn't moved to far ... so we tried it).

So far Moab has tried to climb up the screens (to eat the birds) TWICE. Mike is running home at lunch today to check on them. Hopefully this screen holds up better than the last.

I've also started another blog. Reviewing all things knitting related - come check it out.

Thanks to everyone for the support over this whole motorcycle ordeal!

Possibly Worse?

Yes. It can always get worse. We were just thinking that the cycle wouldn't be done in time for the races this weekend. And worse the Alabama event. But, no. Yesterday while working on the bike the engine stopped working and is sort of ..... well not sort of ... it is DEAD. Mind you, this is the engine that we just had built by Section 8. Paid an arm and a leg for it. Had 2 day shipping on it. And now nothing works. Mike is handling it pretty well. We are just now trying to figure out how in the world to get the bike fixed.

On a good note, I got my craft room organized yesterday and got some knitting done. Yes Mouser - knitting.

ABQ "Is the bike ready?"

A photo is worth a billion words right? I guess the answer is no. The bike is not ready. We got there. Asked to see the bike. Saw the bike. And were a little unimpressed with their operation. Like, "You could still put on the new exhaust." and the response. "New exhaust? Hmmm. I wonder where that is?"

Regardless we are giving them to Friday to put it together, break it in, and map it. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Mike is in first place for the Twins race series and a big fat zero would hurt!

You think that will work?

Seems like lately, more and more, people at work have been asking for something. Then they ask again. And again. And they don't stop asking. Thinking that this is the best way to get what they want. Today, on the verge of physical violence with one, I want to tell them to take their request and shove it up their own anus.

Who ever put the brilliant thought together that this was the "best" way to get stuff accomplished?

Of course. Tasks that get asked for like this only end up on the bottom of my list. So you buggy people. STOP IT - or you'll never get what you want!

Organizing

Telling people about wanting to get rid of stuff brought up a new organization that I didn't know about (freecycle.org). Super super cool. You join. Post. And then people come and get your shit. Tonight people are coming by to get the dressers and stuff. I'm excited to see how clean stuff is after it is gone. Thanks for the tip Ed.

When Its Good ...

I got home last night to find a wedding invitation from my buddy Gwynn. I have to say. One of the prettiest and ingenious invitations I've ever gotten. The hand made paper is filled with wild flowers. You can soak it in water and then just plant the seeds. Just the best invitation ever.

This morning. I sit here eating a breakfast burrito, drinking a cup of coffee and I feel like everything is just right with the world. Every now and again I get this strong feeling like things are perfect. And right now is one of those times.

Monday, April 24, 2006

Why Oh Why?

So sometimes Northern New Mexico just pisses me off. Especially when I'm trying to finish a project and NO ONE in the state has the bits I need to finish it. What is the deal? Mike and I have worked hard on the porch. All we need are 25 more caps for the screen (highly underestimated the total required), and no one has it. When we call Lowes you can't even believe what they say. We finally decided to just order the parts from the local True Value. Should be in in a week or so. The whole situation pisses me off though.

On a lighter note. When fixing the enclosed porch we removed all the nesting material from a family of birds. Mike said, "Don't worry. The smell of paint will keep them from re-nesting." Sorry honey. Not the case. The birds are back with a nest even bigger and nicer than the last. There are babies in there now. So we aren't going to touch it. I'm hoping to get some pictures once the babies are bigger.

Spring Cleaning

I've begun to feel very overwhelmed by crap. Just the shear amount of crap that is around our house. I want to clean up the spare rooms, laundry room, and our room. The long story short is that I've decided to buy some new dressers for our room.

I am going to get rid of a large chair, the chaise lounge, an old solid wood desk, a coat rack seat thing, and two dressers (once the new ones come in). I've offered Dana first dibs on the lounge ... but all the rest is up for grabs. If you are interested, let me know.

If you have questions let me know!
Good Luck.

Enclosed Porch

We talked about working on the porch tonight - but decided to take a much needed rest. This is the current state of the porch.

As you can see - only one section is filled with screen. The rest is empty and still not painted. Hopefully before the end of this weekend we'll be done.

Bird Killing Must Stop

Mike and I spent most of the weekend working outside (always remember to put sun block on the backs of your arms). On Friday Moab caught yet another 2 birds and we both finally had it. Starting Saturday the cats have been locked up and we have been working on the enclosed porch. First taking everything down and prepping to go back up. I'll take some photos tonight and post them.

I also borrowed a macro lens for my camera from Mouser and took some photos around the yard. I think I'm going to use the knitting ones for a background on the knitting blog. Photos from the super cool macro lens!

Coralgina - WONDERFUL

I started the "orangina" in a coral yarn. I thought the pattern was going to take time to get used to. But not the case. I started last night - and this is how far I got in a couple of hours. I'm in love with it. Great pattern. SUPER easy. And the results are instantaneous!

Starting New Project

Last night the yarn I ordered for the pink summer top showed up (oh and Susan's yarn for her felted bag ... which I can't wait to help out with). I made a test swatch. Checked the gauge. And started. I'm totally in love with the pattern and the lace work. Although I'm going to have to be careful. The pattern is complicated enough that if I try to work on it and watch a movie or talk on the phone I know I'm going to mess it up. I'll post photos of it tonight!

And the chemical peel is taking. Right now my face is coming off. Mike said he'll take photos of it tonight as well.

Chemical Peel - Day 1 - AGAIN

Today I went back in for another chemical peel. They thought the first one was just not strong enough (and I'd have to agree since there was next to no peel). This time around, they put the acid on and let it sit for a while. It was SUPER painful. I was sort of socked at how much it hurt this time. I could actually feel burn bubbles rising to the surface. Before we walked out there were three good ones on the side of my face. Even now, hours later, it still hurts and feels very burnt. I'll keep you posted on how it progresses. I'm guessing that by this weekend I will be super yucky girl.

Got to love the alpaca

I bought this yarn up in Taos with my buddy Susan. I fell in love with it. SUPER soft. From Peru and baby alpacas. At $12.95/skein it wasn't cheap ... but well worth the price.

The vest was started on Thursday night and finished on Saturday morning. Fast for me. The pattern came out of the back of a knitting murder mystery. So of course I had to try it. The book wasn't that great - but the pattern was easy to understand and written well.

The question is ... how do you not buy yarn when your cats think it is as soft as their mother? How can you not buy it when all you want to do is pet it? How can you not buy it when it knits up faster than any other yarn you have ever bought? The answer - of course you can't!

On another note, the word synergy is to no longer be used. I hate the word. It makes my skin crawl with tiny little vernacular bugs. From now on, when the word is being used, I will replace it with cyclone. I like that word a lot more, and so should all of you!

RV Weekend

We spent the weekend down in Deming for a motorcycle race weekend. I love race weekends. We have the RV, the cats, Mike all to my self, and my knitting. What more could a girl ask for? I worked on 2 out of my 3 projects. Finished one and messed up the other. The pink vest was finished before Saturday afternoon (I started Thursday night on the drive down). The blanket work was great, but then last night while it was dark, I was moving it and dropped a bunch of stitches. I'll now need to spend some time figuring it out. The blue socks didn't get touched.

As for the race ... Mike took 2nd in HW Superbike AM, 5th in Formula AM and 1st in HW twins. He did flat 1:14s for most of the race. Bits from Ray's bike (which he is still riding since his Duc is being fixed) kept falling off - or being removed.

Yikes - Bad Kitties

I went to put on a sweater I made a couple years back and it appears as if a kitty has had its way with it. See photos. So - the question is - try and fix it? Or pull it out and use the yarn for another project. What do you think?

On another note - my mini peach tree is covered with blooms. Oh I love spring time. Now if the wind would just go away, I'd be set.

Blanket

I was asked how the blanket is coming. Figured I'd post a photo. This is the weaver blanket or is it basket weaver? Threaded? Not sure. It is done in 10 stitch sections. Pretty fun to make. So far any way. Moab thinks it is the greatest blanket ever. She wishes I would make matching pillows.

Projects - Update

I decided - while on line this morning - to make the pink top below. I'm going to make it with this yarn (Shine Sport from Knitpick.com)

I bought the pattern and the yarn should be here in like 2 weeks. Rebecca ... if you want to join in ... you could knit it at the same time. Looks like a fun pattern! Let me know.

I've also decided to make Mouser a pair of black/yellow socks. I'm going to design them this weekend. I'll post what I come up with.

Weekend Work

This past weekend I tried to finish up projects around the house. I have the sock of the months March (blue sock) to finish. Actually I just started them. I have a zig-zag afghan that I'm working on and a queen size quilt that needs quilting. I got a decent amount of work done on all three. Except for Moab trying to sleep inside the quilt while I was sewing it and the interruption of extra project (privacy curtains for the cats in the motorhome) - I got a lot done.

We leave this Thursday night for another RV trip down to Deming. I'll probably spend the rest of the week getting all of my projects together. I am now thinking about doing one of the two tops here. And of course the kitty which won on the voting.

The chemical peel will have to wait until next week. The doctor is out of town this week and has to do it again. I'm not too happy about that.
