That Time of Year

Winter carrots. They have been growing since fall. The ground is soft today - so I pulled some. Delicious!!

Putting Up

Remember all the carrots that I harvested a while back. I wanted some way to save them - but wasn't sure what. I decided to blanch them and freeze them. After blanching they still taste delicious (FYI).

Summer Is Coming!

The temperature is rising and that means summer is coming. Mike has decided to redesign my garden. More photos once he finishes. This redesign means I dug up all winter carrots. Look at how many made it through the cold months!

Garden Time!

I have a post card in my office that says, "My garden kicks ass." I plan to have a kick ass garden again this year. In my standard gardening what I've found is that when all the carrots, lettuce or radishes come in at once I'm overwhelmed with all of them. I end up taking over half of my take into work or giving to neighbors. The problem is that when you grow from seed everything pops up at the same time.

My plan for this year is simple. Only plant what Mike and I need and to do things in rotations. Since spring is here and I bet we wont freeze again I decided to go ahead. My plan works like this. Buy a few plants of the things we eat already started, plant half the seeds for those plants this weekend, plant the other half of the seeds in 2 weeks. 2 weeks after that I will plant more "summer" plants (using the same technique). This means that my garden might look a bit slim, but my goal is to only produce what two people can eat.

Better living through simpler means. More with less!!

As The Garden Dies.

The garden is dying back and I've been spending the weekends cleaning it out. I came across this gem though. Yep. A watermelon that is still holding on. This little guy was packed with seeds and the chickens loved him. Next year maybe I should try growing one earlier?

Monster Carrots.

Fall might be coming ... but the garden is still pumping. The white and orange carrots are ready and perfect for some delicious salads. I might even pickle some :)

Garden ...

Fall is in the air and the garden is still doing well. Potatoes have finally come up and are so delicious it isn't even funny. Mike actually made a statement the other night while we were picking veggies, "I never knew growing your own food could be so freaking fun." Made me smile.

What Does The Garden Grow!

Back Yard Yummies.

The garden is in full production. Garlic, onions, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, herbs .... I could do on and on. I'm just wondering how I'm going to eat all of this without Mike around.

Garden Garlic.

I've never grown garlic before. In January I had a few cloves that were going to go bad (sprouting little green heads). So, I tossed them in the garden. Did nothing else. And now I have ... well garlic cloves. Very strange. I read that when the top starts to die you should pull them. These tops were getting a little brown so I thought I'd check them out. Garlic bread anyone? They are currently drying and should be ready for eating in a few weeks!

Too many apples ... so I'm drying them!




A lot of photos on this one. We got home from our road trip and the garden was over grown with weeds. It took us most of the day to sort out the plants.

The apples are producing, dill is going crazy, and the pumpkins are going insane (I'm worried Mike might lawn mower them).

Garden Flowers

During the summer months I like to cut fresh flowers from the garden and put them around the house. The dahlias have been in bloom - but now the gladiolas are coming in. I love the smells and colors that the garden provides!

Too Big To Eat.

I went out to the garden to see how the veggies are coming along - and this massive mother was there - just waiting to be harvested. I'm now trying to figure out what to do with this guy. He is so massive that it would make 4 loafs of bread, or 2 loafs of bread and freeze some, or multiple dinners ..... Hmm. What to make with him?
